NGO Súmate insists that proposed endless reelection is unconstitutional

María Corina Machado, director of non-governmental organization Súmate, once again voiced her organization's disagreement with a referendum to amend the Constitution in order to establish indefinite reelection in Venezuela. "Article 333 of the Constitution provides that every citizen has a duty to assist in bringing the Constitution back into actual effect, and has to defend it, if it ceases to be observed due to acts of force or because of repeal in any manner other than as provided for herein," said Machado. "In Súmate, we do believe that the plan to enforce endless reelection by means of a constitutional amendment is a clear violation of our Constitution and therefore we have the mandate to defend it." She added that the NGO has kicked off a campaign to raise awareness among voters about the reasons why the intended vote is unconstitutional.
