Acting legend Brian Blessed voices his support for campaign

Acting legend Brian Blessed has backed the nation's largest ever reading campaign, which will see free copies of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World handed out to readers across the Capital.

A total of 200,000 copies of the novel are being distributed across the UK to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of the birth of the Edinburgh-born Sherlock Holmes creator. The books will be handed out in libraries, businesses, cafes, pubs and restaurants throughout February and March.
Following the story of Professor Challenger, The Lost World is also being
released to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, from whose
theories of evolution it draws some of its subject matter.

The renowned actor and explorer said he had been inspired by the book. "When I was a child I dreamt of reaching and exploring the mysterious and primeval plateau of Mount Roraima – the fabled ' Lost World' immortalised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle," he said. "In July 1998 I fulfilled this dream when I explored and reached the summit of Roraima in the Gran Sabana in the south east of Venezuela. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's book is a masterpiece of imaginative fiction."
