Opposition leader Carlos Ocariz declared the new mayor of Sucre municipality

The Electoral board of Sucre municipality of the state of Miranda announced at about 2:00 a.m. the victory of the opposition leader Carlos Ocariz as the new mayor of this Caracas district.
The candidate of the opposition unity received 55.69 percent of the votes compared to 43.78 percent received by his rival, the candidate of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Jesse Chacón.

Meanwhile, the opposition candidate Gerardo Blyde was elected mayor of Baruta. Blyde said that Sunday's results showed that Venezuela "can not be intimidated by threats." "The people also have asked governments with good management," he said.

Blyde said that the victory of the opposition in key states such as Miranda, Carabobo, Táchira and Zulia shows that President Chávez is moving away from the urban voters and approaching rural electors. He also said that none of the parties obtained an overwhelming victory and that each candidate received a fair amount of votes.

"There is a neck and neck situation here; we could even say that a bit farther, in favor of democracy; there is a country which advocates good management and there is a country which still has faith in the projects submitted by the president."
