Violence in Venezuelan prison leaves at lease eight people dead

The administrator of a Venezuelan prison says at least eight inmates are dead and 16 were injured after a surge of violence.
Eli Salgado of Sabaneta prison in the western state of Zulia says three people were killed and five wounded when inmates were handling an explosive device and it went off. He told reporters that fighting broke out later when prisoners from that cellblock were moved to another area. He said at least five were killed and 11 injured in the unrest on Friday. The situation in the facility has returned to normal. Killings are frequent in Venezuela's prisons. The watchdog group Venezuelan Prisons Observatory has recorded more than 260 violent deaths so far this year.
