Venezuela gave Uruguay USD 20 million to repair hospitals

The Venezuelan government appears to be very concerned about the health sector in Uruguay. Proof of this is the fact that Venezuela gave the South American country USD 20 million to fund general repairs in two hospitals.
Reconstruction works are to be completed by 2009, when President Hugo Chávez is expected to visit Uruguay to reopen the health facilities. Venezuelan Ambassador to Uruguay Franklin González was the official responsible for conveying the good news (to the Uruguayan people) in a press conference that was aimed to dispel any misunderstandings with Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez. Chávez donated USD 17 million for repairs at Hospital de Clínicas de Montevideo, and USD 3 million to refurbish a cancer hospital.
Controversial investment
Doubts have been cast on the transparency of Venezuelan investments in Uruguay related to the cooperation agreements signed between Chávez and Tabaré Vásquez governments. On Thursday, an attorney for Franklin Durán, a defendant in the trial for cash smuggling in a Florida Court, denounced alleged diversion of funds in the purchase of prefabricated houses from a Uruguayan company.
